Family Social Science faculty, staff and students making headlines

Fall 2007
FSoS graduate student, Jane Newell was named Alumni of Distinction at Anoka Ramsey Community College in August 2007. Jane received her Associates of Art degree from Cambridge Community College, a satellite of Anoka Ramsey in 1989. She was nominated by her mentor and advisor Claudia Kittock, Ph.D., who sparked her interest in the study of families.

Graduate student, PaNhia Yang and Associate Professor, Catherine Solheim have published Financial management in Hmong immigrant families: Change and adaptation in the Hmong Studies Journal. The manuscript is based on PaNhia's master's thesis.

Jason Wilde is the recipient of the 2007 Neubeck Scholarship. Jason has received $500 in professional development funds for presentations and work at NCFR.

Spring 2007
On January 24th, Hennepin County's Fourth Judicial District Court Judge Stephen Aldrich visited Family Social Science. As part of the Spring Colloquium Series, the Honorable Aldrich presented on issues in family law.

Fall 2006
This past November, Jodi Dworkin was honored by the National Council on Family Relations with their Early Career Achievement Award. The award was presented at their annual meeting in Minneapolis. Dr. Dworkin has been recognized for her leadership in the development of web-based programs and information for families dealing with the challenges of parenting teens.

Marlene Stum's Who Get's Grandma's Yellow Pie Plate was featured in the October 24th edition of The New York Times. You can read the article online  here (registration required).

On Sunday, October 22nd, William Doherty appeared on Fox News to discuss the decrease in family dinner time.

On Sunday, October 1st, Wayne Caron was quoted in a Pioneer Press story about a Twin Cities Marathon runner competing in honor of her father who suffers from Alzheimer’s.

Sharon Danes appeared in several magazines this month including Working Mother, Parent, and Low Country Parent (Charleston, SC) discussing topics related to couples and budgeting and teaching children about finances.

Jodi Dworkin has been honored with the Innovations in Student Development award from the Minnesota College Personnel Association for her online course for parents. The award was presented at their annual conference on October 23rd.

Hal Grotevant has been named to the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute Senior Research Fellows Program. The institute, known as the preeminent research, policy and education organization in its field, selected nine fellows for the program.
