For the past six years, Dr. Cathy Solheim and Dr. Jan Hogan have been working with community agency partners across the state to develop, implement, and evaluate financial literacy initiatives. This recent project, funded by the McKnight Foundation, evaluated three different models of financial education for nonprofit organizations that serve low income families to compare their strengths and challenges. One model used community mentors to assist with the training and client teaching, another had learning circles as a method of training and client teaching, and the last model incorporated financial incentives to organizations when the client teaching was completed. The latter organization held financial education training for Southeast Asian and Latino/a participants and used the “Building Wealth in America” curriculum.
