Graduate Students

This is an exciting and ever-changing department. Faculty and students are engaged in an enormous range of leading edge research, writing, and learning. We are in a period of change and growth, so every year there are interesting and important changes in the research that is done here and the courses that are taught. This is a very rewarding department for a student with lots of curiosity, a strong interest in depth and breadth of knowledge about families, openness to new ways of thinking, joy in learning, a reasonable amount of self-discipline, and the courage to carry out creative, innovative writing and research.

World Class University
We operate in a world class university, which means that the University library system is one of the best in the world and that there are exceptionally good faculty members and courses in the many other academic departments in which our graduate students take courses. The faculty of Family Social Science are proud of the graduates of our program. When they leave here, they are obviously very, very sophisticated; they clearly have learned an enormous amount. They compete very favorably for the top jobs in the family field. And they are among the leaders in teaching, research, therapy, and all other professional activities dealing with families.

Graduate Education Goals
The goals of graduate education in family social science involve:

a) integration of family theory, research, and practice

b) sophistication as a producer and consumer of family research

c) depth of knowledge in one or more areas of concentration

At the doctoral level, the marriage and family therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Education of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
