Our Mission: Preparing for the Future of Dementia Care by Supporting Family Centered Care Today

The mission of the Family Caregiving Center is to increase our understanding of family centered care. We are a collaborative learning community which means that everyone serves as teacher and learner. We are a community comprised of those suffering from dementia, their family caregivers, professionals in dementia care and researchers and scholars who study the illness. Our focus is on family centered care - that is care that happens in the home rather than in the hospital or clinic.

There are limits to what the medical system has to offer. New medications are being brought to market, but these do not cure - only slow the progression of symptoms. Means for early detection are being developed. Unfortunately, these only prolong the time that families live in the shadow of dementia. More nursing homes are being built. However, this is the most expensive form of care and the least preferred by families. This means the primary burden for care will fall upon families when family life is already stressed and strained. We must find ways to support families in caregiving.

The number of elders will skyrocket in the coming years. There is no escaping the simple fact - as the number of elders climbs, so will the number of persons with progressive dementia. We will be those elders. The preparations we make now will determine how we will be cared for in the future. These are daunting times but exciting ones as well. We are creating our own futures. We invite you to join in supporting this work - through contributions of money and services. And we invite you to consider joining our community - sharing your knowledge while learning from others.
