Family Orientation

The journey through Alzheimer's disease and similar disorders is a marathon, not a sprint. To orient families to the journey, we use a seven phase model developed out of 20 years of research and clinical experience. This model goes beyond describing the stages in disease progression. It provides a map of the family caregiving experience from the first onset of symptoms to the end of life. In the family orientation program, families complete exercises to identify where they are at in their journey and the issues they currently face. Families are also coached in how to identify the key issues at each phase of the illness journey and how to work through them. The orientation project provides a first step for families entering the Center's learning community.
