Virtual Support Group Research

As family scientists, we are concerned with the support and connection within families. But we are equally interested in all forms of helpful support. An emerging phenomenon is the use of virtual support communities – people coming together on the internet to discuss their care experiences, share information, provide advice and give emotional support. These communities span continents and provide 24/7 access. An additional feature is their unique entry into the daily experience of living with dementia. Posted in the moment, people share candid descriptions of the immediate reactions people have to dementia challenges. Research in this area uses network and content analysis to study the linkages community members form with each other, the topics they discuss, and the impact of community participation on the emotional content of their postings.
